Often I wonder, how do these kids do it.
Do they play tricks on us?
Are they using onions to produce tears?
I honestly like to believe they don't.
Here is one of my favourite actors.

Thanks a lot, Gee.
The link you provided didn't work, but I'll search the internet for that interview. Shouldn't be too hard.
As for the Joel Haley Osment connection: I think I have most films he did. Great actor and a lovely demeanor.
Maybe I'll start a topic on him some day.

I think I recall in the extras on the DVD "Bogus" Haley explains how he does it.

In asian movies the directors usually yell abuse at the kid actors or if that doesn't work they hit them until they cry for real.

I feel like that's probably a bit of a stereotype. Maybe it does happen, but I don't think every Asian director works that way. I think I've read enough interviews with Asian directors to say this probably doesn't apply to most of them.

I know I was kidding, well sort of, I believe it does happen though. In America to get boy actors to cry they tell them that they are adopted or that they are actually Canadians.  Smiley  No, that's not true, it's more like, "Your mum (or mom) just phoned and said to tell you your dog is dead, happy birthday! Camera!".

I once read a story that Jackie Cooper's uncle Norman Taurog was directing him in a film and used that very trick (the dog one - not the Canadian one  Tongue) to get him to cry on screen.
