A boy, a dog and a frog
A little boy prepares for a great adventure into the wilderness (just outside his back yard). He is focused on his mission which is to hunt down and capture a prehistoric amphibious creature (a frog).First he puts on his personal protection equipment (lace up boots that are too big, but safety first right). He enters a storage room nearby (the garden shed) and procures a restraining device (fish net) and a containment vessel (a bucket).
Now he sets out on his quest, leaving behind his home and all those who love him, not knowing when or if he’ll return (or maybe he’ll be back before dinner). He is accompanied by a pack animal descended from the wolf (his dog). The bond between boy and beast is strong but the boy is the alpha male, the beast loyally obeys his commands. They enter the thick under growth, following a mysterious path that leads them further away from the civilized world. Danger (could be) lurking behind every tree or rock (or not) but the boy bravely continues on, (HAS HE NO FEAR?!). Guided by his instincts (or he just follows the trail) he discovers the creatures’ habitat (a pond).
The hunt is on! The boy freezes( a close up of his really cute face), he spots the Frog ,the Frog spots him, their eyes meet , then ( with the skill of a four  year old ) he stalks his prey, slowly moving closer to the water , he raises the containment  vessel  (the bucket) then strikes. But what’s this? , the creature, sensing danger escapes! The boy searches the reeds in vain until his beast sounds an alarm (the dog barks). Now armed with the restraining device (the fish net) the boy launches another assault on the panic stricken frog (OH THE HUMANITY) will the gods intervene and save the defenseless frog from this marauding giant and certain doom? After many failed attempts the boy rests on a log, disappointment weighing heavily on him (Orr so sad), his faithful beast tries to comfort him (Orr so nice).
The frog croaks!! The boy’s attention is drawn to the frog.  What is the frog doing? The frog is in plain view in the middle of the pond, just sitting there. Is the frog taunting the boy? Is the frog trying to lure the innocent child into a watery grave? Foolishly the boy renews his pursuit of the frog but when his equipment becomes caught in the trees he must enter into hand to frog combat. The boys’ size and strength is no match for the frogs’ maneuverability. The frog easily slipped from his grasp and is one hop ahead of the boy. Changing tactics the boy chases after the frog, running as fast as his little legs in over sized boots could carry him; his beast (the dog) joins the hunt. OH NO!! The boy stumbles and falls, crashing into the earth with the same force as a sausage dropped from a BBQ. Is the boy injured? Can he recover? Will he cry for his mommy? YES! YES! YES! He’s up. Does this kid feel no pain? (Big sigh of relief)
Retrieving his capture device (the fish net) the boy once again goes after his nemesis. The frog hatched his evil plan to do away with the child once and for all by climbing onto a slippery log, (DIABOLICAL). Unaware of the peril that he’s in the boy steps onto the slippery log. The frog uses itself as bait, the boy steps closer and closer. The muddy surface of the log causes the boy to slip and plunge into the watery depths below (about six inches). The frog stares at the boy, anticipating the child’s demise (boo) but the boy struggles to safety and collects his equipment.  Returning to his base camp to change his wet pants (not the first time he had to do that) the boy has now become the prey and the frog follows him.
The final scene is of the boy in the bath lovingly washing his beast (no, not that beast, the dog. Please keep it clean) when the frog enters the room (queue the jaws music). The boy sees the frog and smiles, the frog stares at the boy in a cold blooded way. Could they be friends or has the frog come to claim another victim?
Now, I know that some short films are left up to your own interpretation but I need your help with this one as it leaves too many questions open. Some may say that it is just a sweet, light hearted look at an innocent child’s day having fun catching a frog. But what was he going to do with the frog after he caught it?
Was he going to play with it for awhile and then let it go? or tape it to a sky rocket, or terrorize little Suzy at day care for giving him cooties. Was the boy a hero who was trying to prevent other little boys from drowning?
Why did the frog follow the boy home? Was it to have another game of catch me if you can or to infect the boy with warts or secrete poisonous toxins on him. If you think I’m hard on frogs come to Queensland Australia and see what our five year olds do to them.
Besides my bull s**t I liked this film. Freddy Koehler played the part of a four year old boy really well and did all his own stunts (falling over).Location was good as was the camera work. The dog and the frog did a good job too.
