English title: Tree without leaves.
You might wonder why director Kaneto Shindô shot this film in black and white. The family drama took place before WW II, that might be the explanation.
The story evolves around a mother-son relation. The older Haru as a narrator (now in his sixties) worships her. There are many tender moments he shares on the screen. I have not been able to trace the name of the boy actor playing Haru. Your help will be much appreciated. My rating for this film is 9/10. There is a trailer available on youtube:

hm. it doesn't seem likely that they never credit the poor kid... but then again, maybe they felt he'd been rewarded enough on film Wink

At first glance, I can't seem to find the young Haru actor's name, either, although I found his "young" sisters' and brother's actors names... nobody seems to be 10, though... the youngest I've found is 14, and it's his sister. I may have to enlist some japanese friends to help!

edit:  FOUND IT!

The boy is Kazuki Yamanaka (山中一希), which is somehow missing from many of the cast lists.  I eventually found the tape for sale on Allcinema (japan site) and he was listed as "juvenile" (and he is 3rd credited at the start of the film, immediately after "mom" and "dad" and before his "siblings.")

It's still a big mystery for me though, how the MAIN young actor is so hard to find, whereas everyone lists the sisters and brothers and such.

I must confess, it really tested my ability to read Japanese (which I actually can do, to a limited degree, otherwise I would never had been able to decipher the symbol for "juvenile"). Not a single site in English (or Japanese, for that matter) actually told who played the young Haru, and those that did bother to list Yamanaka at all, only mentioned his name without any role credit.

And now WE are the only English-speaking site who apparently knows!  Even on most of the Japanese sites (Japanese wiki, for example) his name never even appears, as though his was somehow a smaller role? His role didn't look so small to me Wink

*** maybe now we can get someone to transfer your great caps into the gallery... I tried, but I don't know how to take them from this topic rather than the gallery uploads.

Great effort, thanks again. I'll upload the caps once more, in the Gallery board this time.

He had an important role, as did the mother. Some scenes had to be rehearsed more often than usual. I wonder why? By the way, he had very cute swimming-wear!

If I knew I would immediately replace the copy I have. However, I'm afraid the DVD is no longer available.

If you have it on VHS, and you have DVD Recorder, you can possibly dub it onto DVD, only problem is the sound and video quality won't be any better, but on DVD it won't get any worse!
