Suburbicon

As a 1950s suburban community self-destructs, a home invasion has sinister
consequences for one seemingly normal family.

......................

This is an amazing movie.
Noah Jupe is an amazing actor.

Something I rarely do:  I rented the movie.  Then I watched it again the next day.

Something you may not see from the summary or from the trailer:
The whole thing is seen from the point of view of the 11-year-old boy.

In the extras are some interviews.  It was a bit strange to see Noah there,
talking in a British accent.  I saw no trace of it in the movie itself.

I submitted more screen shots for the gallery.  But they may be spoilers.
So I recommend that you see the movie first, before you look at them.

I viewed Suburbicon today.

First, I want to say that Noah Jupe is just great in it.

The first portion of the movie, I was rather liking it. I liked the whole exaggerated 50s aesthetic. Some of the scenes were very good. I like the scene where Nicky sees the lineup and can't understand why his parents are not identifying the men they know must have been his mother's killers. Later on in the movie, I like the scene where the Claims man from the insurance company first visits the household, toying with Margaret because he's figured out what they did (and toying with the viewer as well, because at first we don't know how much he has realised).

But overall, the movie was just disappointing. With the subplot involving the Mayers at first I was thinking, 'well, this is all very heavy-handed, but let's see how this family connects with the main plot'. It is terribly disappointing to come to the end of the movie and still the two stories are in no way linked. The whole thing is a mess. And nothing even much happens in this subplot, except that the family are attacked by the community, with the police seemingly totally ineffectual at upholding the rule of law, and that's that. The movie would have been better concentrating on one theme or plot.

Although I liked some individual scenes, for me it has the feel of a movie that is less than the sum of its parts. So I'm afraid that in this instance I agree with the critics!  Smiley

Here are some screencaps of Noah as Nicky. I look forward to seeing him in other films.

I love the fact that human ears are translucent!
