Feelings of grief bubble up for Mikey as his Mother isn’t there to share a special moment with him. Mikey's Father, who knows what’s up, has a trick up his sleeve to help Mikey process his mourning. However, the trick works better than expected which leads Mikey's father to question if there was more to it than just pretend.

Young Mikey - Finn MacEachern

Pay attention!  We see Mikey many years later going up on a high place and sending a paper plane to his father.  As he had promised to do.

Yep, I got it when I watched it the second time - wasn't paying attention - sorry! (I mistook the grown-up son for his father - both bearded, see.)

Does older Mikey actually believe, then, that paper darts constitute a means to contact the dead? It seems most improbable, though I suppose it makes a refreshing change from a seance.

A bit too syrupy sentimental for my taste. On the 'Film Shortage' site, the director basically admits that the whole thing was cobbled together because she wanted to use a new toy she'd purchased. This is the case with so many short films - the film-maker first decides he wants to make a short film and then he scrabbles around trying to find something meaningful to say. There is then the temptation to fall back on kitsch, mere sentimentality or cliché - a temptation which few first-time film-makers seem able to resist!

I did like the young actor, though.  Smiley

Thanks - I've added that little tidbit to the Notes on the film profile page.
