I'm always a little suspicious when Wikipedia gives a year without a month or day, because I suspect that someone just read that he was 12 when he made his film, and so subtracted 12 from the date of the film's release in order to get his supposed birth year. And indeed one of the articles that Wikipedia references says that he was 12 during the filming of "Salaam Bombay!" - though one of the other articles says he was 11. None of them say directly which year he was born.
