It's really interesting to see the difference between the reality shows in Europe/UK and the ones we get in US/Canada. I'm speaking from a Canadian perspective so I don't actually know how big reality TV is over there or if they get as many silly shows as we do. But looking at shows like this and a few others I've heard about, there seems to be a trend overseas for reality shows that at least try to have some sort of educational or sociological value.

Over here, it's all about watching people do stupid things for money - like eating bugs and guts and maggots - or backstabbing each other, usually (again) for money.

The two extremes seem to meet somewhere in between, with shows like "Loft Story" in France, which is apparently very similar to the American and Canadian Loft reality shows that consist of putting a bunch of people together in a loft and see what happens.

I'm not a big fan of any of the reality shows I've seen, bit I'd like to see a few of the ones I heard of from overseas. This is certainly one of them. Thanks for mentioning it, aaaa.

does PBS extend its reach into canada?

i think quite a few brit series (like the edwardian house or boys alone) have been bought by PBS - or screened by BBC World.

i imagine uk skooldaze will arrive stateside soon.

maybe a canadian broadcaster will buy it too.

also, like the loft - it's a generic format which other countries might eventually copy.

we've plenty of our own (+ imported) cruddy, reality tv shows but i'm disinclined to watch 'em - life's too short.

I hope the deluge of reality shows in the last couple of years is just a fad...

I did like the 1940's House and the American version called Frontier House, but everything else I've seen labled 'reality' has been totally boring.

The 'reality' genre has to be one of the greatest misnomers in TV history.
