2001, France - Canada
U.S. title: "Alias Betty"
with
Alexis Chatrian as Jose Novacki
Arthur Setbon as Joseph Fisher

. . . .
This movie is made up of several intertwining stories.

Betty Fisher, bestselling author, lives in the up-scale suburbs of Paris with her son Joseph...

Carole Novacki lives in the slums with her son Jose... It seems to her that Jose interferes with partying.

When Joseph dies, Betty is devastated.  Untill Betty's mother (who, we
find out, has been mentally ill for a long time) steals Jose as a replacement.

Betty of course wants to return him to his home.  Until she sees the evidence that Jose is severely mistreated there.

So would it really be best for the boy if she keeps him?

Betty's weasel of an ex-husband shows up.  And Betty is falling for a
handsome young doctor.  More and more complications... How can things
work out for poor little Jose?

Thanks very much for the review and images, Hosenhaus. I've wanted to rent this one for a while, but they only have it on VHS at the video store and I was hoping to find a DVD copy so I could make some high-quality caps.

It sounds (and looks) like it's worth watching.

Hey, I'd never heard of it, and probably wouldn't have given it a second look without this review, hosenhaus.  Thank you very much!  What cute kids. Smiley

Love,
Sir J

I really enjoyed all the plot twists and complications of this story, it was one of my favorites of 2001.

I would not rate this high as a boy movie however  because although some of the plot does revolve around them, neither boy gets extensive screen time.
