Movie is based on this book:

A popular comic novel by the author Karel Polácek (1892-1944) that describes life in a small town between the wars. The story is told from the point of view of a young boy who with his four friends – altogether the five of the title – finds various ways of getting in trouble. Indeed, the book feels much like Huckleberry Finn, with a solid grounding in Czech small town life. Though a carefree nostalgic feel pervades the work, it was actually written just before the author was deported to a concentration camp and not published until after the war. Indeed, it was the Jewish Polácek who more than any other was able to understand and speak to the provinciality (=> malomeštáctví) of the Czech mentality
