Best boy actor performance (Read 9,616 times)

	If you had to decide for the best, most affecting and stunning performance you have ever seen by a young male actor, which one would it be? I know that it's very hard to name one particular performance due to the variety and the multitude of outstanding character portrayals. Different genres and different characters require different skills, making it almost unfair to match individual accomplishments. It's not the movie as a whole nor the plot itself, but just the plain overall performance of an actor I mean. Of course your choice can be subjectively biased. Well, it's almost impossible to choose a character without personal liking anyways I guess. If I had to decide, I would name Christian Bale in Empire of the Sun as my #1. 	Great topic! I'm unable to be objective now, as I watched Where Eskimos Live only a month ago, and that little guy in the movie really impressed me. So I'll vote for Sergiusz Zymelka as #1. But I will give my list of runners-up, in no particular order: 1) Jack Wild in Oliver! 2) Leonardo Dicaprio in What's Eating Gilbert Grape 3) Haley Joel Osment in The Sixth Sense (The Academy would agree with me on the above three. But what do they know? They almost always got it wrong.) 4) Christian Bale in Empire of the Sun

	The best I have ever seen. Several good ones I could name. Some from the past. the very BEST is Haley Joel Osment in the Sixth Sense A crime that he did not receive an oscar.

	Impossible choice for me. Too many great performances by great actors in great movies. I will say, however, that I think HJO's performance in The Sixth Sense is terribly overrated. He's a good actor and all his performances are good, but I don't see what all the fuss is about that one in particular. Personally, I think his performance in Artificial Intelligence is 10 times as powerful and convincing. It's also a much more challenging and complex role. Having said that, there are probably dozens of performances I would pick over any of HJO's. It's kind of arbitrary to pick only one, but I'll go with Anton Glanzelius in My Life as a Dog, which is possibly my favourite movie.

	I'm inclined to go with Leo DiCaprio, 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape' My problem is that he was at least 18 at the time. But his performance was astonishing. Runner-up, or even tied with, would be Roddy McDowell - 'How Green Was My Valley'

	The key that differentiates a great acting performance from an average performance, is often dependant upon the story of the film. Roddy McDowell was a good child actor, however it seems that many of his appearances were barely above par. A film like "How Green Was My Valley" was simply a remarkable story, and it seems that this helps make a child actor's performance better. A film such as Leo Dicaprio's "What's Eating Gilbert Grape", was successful *because* of the young actor's performance.... and it was he that literally made the film as incredible as it was. This also holds true for Jackie Cooper and Ricky Schroder's performances in their versions of the film, "The Champ". It's just an average story, and requires an incredible acting performance by the co-lead youngster to make it a success. (i.e. when the story was made with Tim Considine, as "The Clown", the same story created nothing more than an average film). Perhaps a great acting performance is what made huge successes in the films, "The Search" and "When Andrew Came Home". These seem to receive a large number of great reviews for each child's performance, and these are dvds that would be nice to see at some point in the future.
