This is interesting news Nicolas.

Was the Schroder version of Apt Pupil ever released?
I would've liked to see him play Todd Bowden, although I always pictured that character as more California. Ricky was definitely East coast all the way.

  Now Zab, that is really odd. Based on looks I would have pegged Ricky as a California boy.

How can one tell the difference between East Coast and West Coast actors...

I always thought that West Coast actors were blond and tanned and dressed funky and said things like "I mean man I was like wow awesome" and
East Coast actors were dark and swore a lot  and dressed funky and said things like "man I mean I was like awesome."
But that's only the 40 to 50 age groups.  Grin

Zabladowski, the Schroder version of "APT PUPIL" isn't available on dvd or vhs, unless it's someplace quite obscure.

According to imdb:

In 1987, Rick Schroder was originally cast to play Todd Bowden in Apt Pupil ( 1998 ). This first attempt to film this story ran over budget and was stopped. It starred Rick Schroder and Nicol Williamson, and was directed by Alan Bridges.

In actuality, this began filming in 1985.... so imdb isn't 100% accurate on the casting date.

Hence, the film was made, but never completed.  Wonder if the actual footage was tossed?  Or if it's in a warehouse someplace?  Or if a film could actually be edited and produced out of what was shot?

The director is 79 years old now, and hasn't been at the helm of a film for 15 years..... so contacting him would probably be a fruitless venture.

Maybe information could be weaned from the Production studio itself..... if it still exists.

Thanks Nicolas for your studious reply. It's an interesting question as to what happens to the footage for projects which are never finished. I'd be interested in seeing what they had in the can for this one.

As for you two comedians....... Smiley

I was referring to the Ricker's accent and speech patterns which are painfully east coast. I agree that his physical appearance could pass for California, but once he started tawking any thought that he was a Californian would have been gone.  Wink

I struggle to tell the difference between a Canadian and an American accent...  I can pick a Southern accent of course (they stretch out vowels to the limit) and sound a bit slow... and I can pick a Brooklyn accent but that's about it.

Most Americans can't speak English anyway   Smiley

Most Americans can't speak English anyway

As an English and journalism major from a respectable European University, suffice it to say that Cal is 100% correct.

It is one thing to learn the English language, yet another vast endeavor to conquer the 'American' way of speech. (And as stated previously, this also varies depending upon East-West-North-South in the United States).

Ricky Schroder could have spoken a mélange of Fanagalo & Inuktitut ..... and all his dvds would still be within arm's reach in this house.

We Americans may speak with a variety of accents.
Having lived in the US south for a dozens years now, let me tell you there are variations in the way people speak from state to state and even regions within a state.  There is no single "southern" accent.  I, myself, have been accused of speaking "California," which some define as "no accent."  It seems to me that in its self would be an accent.  Everybody speaks their language with some kind of accent.

One thing about us, however:  we speak English differently thoughout the US, but at least we can all understand one another.  That's often not the case on the Island of Great Britain.

Very true, Wildeboy.

From a European perspective, it's much easier to understand an American than an English person.  This is particularily with those from the south who tend to speak at a relatively slower rate.

And considering the topic of this thread, it would be incredible if just one film director would dedicate his/her life to creating kid's films that are 100% accurate to their respective novels in speech/sets/costume/etc.

It's rare for an entire novel to 'fit' into a film..... but accuracy with what IS filmed would be appreciated in itself.
