It is rare in the western world films, and even the larger percentage of films here in Europe, to see a motion picture that ends on a rather sad note.

This particular film does, and am wondering if there are any other boyactor films in a similar vein.

Two that come to mind are Truffaut's classic "Les Quatre Cents Coups", and the Argentine classic, "Cronica De Un Nino Solo".

ACLA seemed a bit soft in some areas where it could have been more realistic.  Nevertheless, the ending seemingly made up for prior shortfalls in the film.

I'll think of a few more, but here's two that immediately came to mind:

Maybe this whole thread should have the label:
SPOILER
Don't read it unless you want to know how the movie ends...

Yeah, but then you don't know which movies are going to bring up ahead of time. That's the problem with this sort of question. Just mentioning a title automatically (more or less) ruins the ending, or at least gives a pretty big clue as to how it's going to end.

Not that I generally care all that much about spoilers. Personally, I find that if a movie completely relies on plot twists to be effective, then it's probably not that good.

One great movie with a tragic eding is:

I'm sure there are tons of others, but this one came to mind immediately. And knowing that it ends tragically doesn't really spoil it, cause you don't know exactly what's going to happen until it happens. And when it finally does happen, it feels like you haven't been cheated with a fake happy ending. It feels like the writer and director dared to push it to its logical and most realistic (though tragic) conclusion.

Good movie.
