why?

Well, I've seen plenty of movies about fascism. I will eventually see The White Ribbon, but I'm usually left with a feeling of dissatisfaction after watching a Haneke film. I'd much rather watch something that is more relevant to me. Sampson & Delilah is not a 'boy' movie and I made no suggestion that it was.  The thread topic is 'Cannes 2009', not 'boy movies at Cannes'. I happen to appreciate films that deal with issues relating to ethnic minorities, particularly ones where those minorities are cultures that contrast with the dominant society.

I really like the music used in the first section of the trailer for Samson and Delilah (with the out-of-tune violin). I wonder if that's music from the film. (Trailers often use music from other sources.)

Thanks for sharing the reasons for your anticipation. I have been known to enjoy movies without boy actors in them every now and again too.  Wink

Australian movies haven't been getting much distribution in the US recently (unless you count things like Knowing where a few Americans are exported to Oz to make an "American" movie). Let us know if the film meets your expectations when you get to see it.

Australian movies don't fare all that well here either. There were 50 feature films made in Australia last year and only a handful got any decent exposure here. The movie 'Australia' was a rare exception and that was because of the Hollywoodisation of the film. Our top ten box office films are almost a mirror image of the American box office.

Pretty much the exact same situation here in Canada. Canadian films don't get much distribution or attention, and the top box office hits are the same as in the US.

With the exception of the Province of Quebec, of course, which should be considered as a separate market, and also a separate industry. Local French-language films do very well. Although they too suffer from "Hollywoodization," as filmmakers try to emulate the Hollywood model, with varying success.

It was wrong to say that The White Ribbon is a rehash of Les Choristes.

The story isn't the same at all.  It was just the basis of the choir in both films, and the worked-up drama toward it..... that is something personally unappreciated..... but others probably like this sort of thing.  Having not liked Les Choristes at all, there was already two strikes against this film before viewing it last Thursday night.  Maybe "Das weiße Band" deserves better credit, just not from here.

The jury awarded the grand prize to this film because it is well-acted, (and well-directed), but you have to like this theme and a plot of this sort in order to appreciate the movie.  Hence, the reasons for the aforementioned negativity regarding it.
