Thank you, 'Zlabadowski', for enlightening me regarding this poll and I see you are one of the AFTI committee members. It seems to be an important event in the boy actor enthusiast's calendar. Oh dear, now I have to wait a whole year before I can add my vote. I can understand how many appreciators of the Boy Actor will be in dispute with the results. I've never heard of most of the boys listed much less the films in which they've appeared.
How does Max Records in 3rd place beat Kodi Smit-McPhee in 5th? Max stars in one of these endless special effects films where the cute CGI animals carry most of the film while Kodi starred in a film that demanded some real emotional acting.
For a cute smile and good looks then my vote would've gone to Chase Ellison who was placed a miserable joint 10th. What justice is there in this world for poor boy actors such as he? Wink

Uh........ what?

Have you seen Where the Wild Things Are?

It was probably the best performance by a boy actor I've seen in the past 5 years. A remarkable achievement with incredible emotional depth and realistic acting.

You don't have to like the movie, but that description absolutely doesn't do it justice. For one thing, it's factually inaccurate. It's not a special effects driven film at all, and the creatures are not CGI. (They're actual costumes with actors in them with puppeteers controlling the facial expressions.) I'm not even sure you can accurately call them "cute," or at least not exclusively that. They're also kind of violent and emotionally disturbed and scary.

But more to the point, it's a very sophisticated film with pretty heavy subject matter, directed at adults as much as at children, and that doesn't treat the audience like a bunch of idiots. It also made me cry, and trust me, I don't usually cry at the sort of movies you describe.

Not to mention that Where the Wild Things Are was a big hit that got mostly positive reviews.

I respect your opinion if you have seen the film and did not enjoy it. But it sounds to me like you're judging a book by its cover. If you haven't seen it, don't dismiss it as garbage without at least doing a little bit of research.

So far I'm the only one who has rated that film on our database, so I guess you'll have to take my word for it. But I gave it a 10/10.

(I haven't seen The Road yet.)

Well I voted for:

1. Kodi Smit-McPhee
2. Bill Milner
3. Layton Williams
4. Kasey Mottet Klein
5. Tom Russell

Three of which are Australian boys, one is a Brit and the other is French. They are the ones that stuck in my head the most in 2009.  As for Cole Sprouse even being in the top ten ... well let's just be thankful that he's on the way down.

I've yet to watch "Where the Wild Things Are" so I can't comment on Max Records as yet. Most of the others are decent choices except for Justin Bieber who's not even an actor.

I'd be interested to see other people's top five choices even if they didn't vote in the poll.

I didn't vote because I haven't seen enough 2009 releases. I can usually only make a top 5 a few years later when I start catching up on releases I missed.

Kodi Smit-McPhee looks like he's had some great roles, but I haven't seen him in anything yet. Bill Milner I'm a huge fan of based on his performance in Son of Rambow,  but I haven't seen his latest ones.

Max Records would have been my #1 pick. I probably would have picked Jimmy Bennett as my #2, since he did a good job in Shorts and in his brief appearance in Star Trek. (I think I even preferred Jacob Kogan as young Spock, but haven't seen him in anything else, and that role wasn't really substantial enough to vote for him.)

Finally, I might have picked Preston Bailey as my #3 for his recurring role in Dexter. It's not super-substantial, but he is cute as a button and I like the show, so...

My choices for this year.

#1 Filip Garbacz for Swinki. No single performance I saw last year impressed me more. Although I suspect I'm the only voter to have even seen it, he did too well not to be number one in my book.

#2 Jimmy Bennett primarily for Trucker. I have been impressed by Jimmy going all the way back to Daddy Day Care. His roles are getting more demanding and he is having no trouble keeping pace.

#3 Jacob Ottensten for Lars og Peter . Nicolas raved about the performance when he saw it in Cannes. I was fortunate to catch this short film in a US festival this fall. Jacob did an amazing job and I hope someone gets him into feature films straight away.

#4 Matthew Knight. A guilty pleasure. Most of his movies aren't very good at all, but Matthew shines in them regardless. He would rank higher if he had a better agent.  Smiley

#5 Matous Kratina for Kdopak by se vlka bál (Who's Afraid of the Wolf). Matous was in a supporting role in this film, playing the best friend and trusted advisor to the lead character (Dorota Dedková). The chemistry between the two of them was amazing. The director said at our screening that Matous was actually cast first (he was too good to pass up) and Dorota was later cast because she was friends with Matous in real life. Matous was a real charmer, however the Czechs haven't had a legitimate boy star since Tomás Holý and I'm not expecting that to change. IMDB shows no new projects at present for him.

My problem in voting every year is that I have too many to choose from. If I were allowed more choices, I might have opted for one of these....

Eduardo Garé or Eduardo Espinilla in Cobardes
Styrbjörn Roald in Goda Rĺd
Niall Wright in James
Shane Curry in Kisses
Alex Ferris in The Light of Family Burnam
Karl Alexander Seidel in Lippels Traum
Tobias Lamberts in Morrison krijgt een zusje
Paul-André Brasseur in Ce qu'il faut pour vivre
Knox Sparks in Boy|Man
Janos Giuranna in Sommersonntag
Magnar Gustavsen in Varde
William Miller in Runaway
Teja and Shiva Varma in 7 Days in Slow Motion
Maxwell Perry Cotton in Like Dandelion Dust
John Bell in A Shine of Rainbows
Syed Fazal Hussain and Navaid Jabbar in Ramchand Pakistani

You have a right to express your opinion Cal but as a Sprouse fan I just have to say that your statement about Cole was hurtful to me. If you don't like him that's fine but still, it was hurtful.   Cry

starchild... I don't dislike Cole as an individual, and really it shouldn't be hurtful, there's no need to even give a rat's arse about what I like or don't like. If you like Cole, that's cool. I used to like him when he was younger, and as I've said many times before that virtually all boy actors lose their appeal to me once they reach 15ish, as BOYS that is. To me they are now MEN and to appeal to me as an adult they need to compete with the likes of Pacino, DeNiro, Crowe, Rush, etc, etc.  They have to earn their stripes and compete with the big boys, and that takes real talent.

Are you trying to say that the Sprouse twins are not as talented as Al Pacino? How dare you!

That's cool Cal. No problem. I have been a Sprouse fan since I saw them in Big Daddy and I am VERY protective of my Sprouses. They are the greatest actors in history. Much better than that Pacino guy. Just kidding. I know that they are not that great but still, I love them. Like I said, no problem.   Smiley

I have a confession to make ... I didn't get round to seeing 'Where The Wild Things Are' at the cinema. I will wait until the DVD comes out.
'Zlabadowski' gave a long list of boy actors none of whom I have even heard! How can you vote for these boy actors unless you've seen the films they appeared in? Judging by some of the titles such films would be lucky to appear even at your local 'art' cinema.
I think the Sprouse twins have been hugely overrated. In fact, apart from 'Big Daddy', just what films have they appeared in? Talking of twins, much better were Jonathan and Robert Timmins in the 2000 'The Prince and the Pauper' (and better looking too!) or even Billy and Bobby Mauch in the 1937 production.

Well, you're just full of assumptions, aren't you?

I'm sure if Zab voted for the boys in these films, it's because he has seen them.

As joseph correctly points out, I have seen all of the performances I cited and then some!

I am fortunate enough to live near a large metropolitan area that provides me access to a number of film festivals which make low profile productions available for viewing. In addition, I travel a bit and take in a few more, in addition to using other media sources to obtain the productions.
Some of these have been made available to me through the generosity of friends, but most I have seen in a cinema. William Miller's miniseries was aired on CBBC. If you are the kind of person who generally waits until after a film is released to DVD to see it, you will mostly be left voting for tv stars from your home country (like the Sprouses).

I'll see your confession and add two of my own.

I've only seen the first 60 minutes or so of Where the Wild Things Are. I had some free time between two film festival screenings and took a look. I didn't see enough to make time to see it again in the theatres, but I definitely plan to watch it on DVD.

Confession #2

I like the Sprouses!  Smiley
I became a fan after having seen them perform live and in person. Neither will be under consideration for my vote in this poll until they do something other than The Suite Life on Deck. That show doesn't present an opportunity for anyone to demonstrate talent at all.

I guess I'll add my two cents in on this subject although I probably only have about 1 1/2 cents worth to give as I am not familiar with all of the actors on the list. Although I can say that for the most part I oftentimes don't agree with the results.

That being said, I do agree with Jimmy Bennett getting the top spot. He has been quite a busy bee lately and has done some really good work. He's quite cute, talented, and funny as hell. However, I just don't get the whole Justin Bieber thing. Granted he's a cutie but he is NOT an actor and if he ever hits puberty he won't even be a singer either. What is the deal with him being on a list of top boy actors let alone in the top ten list. Am I missing something here. Was I asleep or on drugs all year. (Don't anyone dare answer that last part).  Roll Eyes
