Arsalan Ghasemi plays the role of 12 year old Ali, the main character in a lovely film from Iran called "Music Box" (2008). The young lead was very effective as the lonely, sensitive and caring boy who questions the vocation of an 'angel of death' and gets more than he bargained for. Be ready to shed a few tears.

Directed by Farzad Motamen

A child in mourning reaches out to a force beyond this world in this psychological drama. Ali (Arsalan Ghasemi) is a 12-year-old boy who hasn't been able to come to terms with the death of his mother. While the boy's father (Shahrokh Forutanian) and grandfather (Dariush Asadzadeh) look after him and try to offer comfort, Ali wants nothing more than to see his mother again. Ali's father is a doctor and the boy sometimes helps out at the pharmacy in a hospital where he works. While at the hospital, Ali becomes aware of a strange interloper named Maleki (Rambod Javan) who frequently visits the terminally ill patients. Ali comes to realize that Maleki is actually the spirit of death, who is there to guide the hopelessly ill to their place in the next world. Ali turns to Maleki and asks him if he could do something special and allow him to be reunited with his mother.

World Movies, I think, but I'm not 100% sure. It was a couple of months ago. I'm trying to sort out my DVRs and noticed that this movie hasn't got a profile here, nor has the actor, it's also not profiled on IMDb which is very surprising as it is an excellent film that I'd highly recommend.

Iranian films have lost their popularity in the US. Never very easy, they have become increasingly harder to find or even hear about. You are so lucky to have World Movies, cal.

It's very surprising that this film is not on IMDb yet. A Google search for the title and director's name returns lots of hits. It seems to have played at several festivals and even won some prizes. I'm sure it'll be added eventually.

None of the pages ever mention the Iranian title, so perhaps it is only called Music Box?
