My ideal boy movie would be the ultimate version of
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The Selznick version with the precious little Shirley Temple clone Tom Kelly didn't perfectly fit my notion of Tom. Jackie Coogan (1930) had the acting chops to put his own spin on Tom Sawyer, but Coogan wasn't the epitome of boyishness IMHO. I would cast Don O'Connor as Tom Sawyer and keep Coogan's co-star, the amazing Trent 'Junior' Durkin as Huckleberry Finn.
Don O'Connor actually played Huck Finn to virtual perfection in
Tom Sawyer, Detective (1938), so he could recreate that essential barefoot backwoods authenticity. But Junior Durkin went beyond perfection, as if Huck jumped right off the page into real life. Maybe the best acting realization of a literary character, and not just of boys.
Billy Cook excelled as Tom in
Detective. Though based on a lesser work, I think
Detective is the best film adaptation of any Mark Twain story, featuring delightful Americana to surround the two masterly boy actors. So I'd use that director Louis King.
But O'Connor could summon Tom Sawyer's extroversion and trouble-making charm better than any actor I've ever seen. The key to the pairing is Huck's willingness to be submissive to Tom, even though Huck is much smarter of the two. A natural 'leader of the pack', O'Connor could impose just the right sprinkling of pleasant bossiness for the much cooler Huck to submit to him. Check Don out in
Boy Trouble (1939) to see Tom Sawyer teleported into the 20th century.
O'Connor also stood out in young love roles, essential to playing Tom Sawyer. I'd pick Sarita Wooten, O'Connor's girlfriend in
On Your Toes (1939) to play Becky.
There are many surprisingly authentic foreign versions of
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, better than most American versions, I think. But Don O'Connor and Trent Durkin are Ultimate Boy Titans, IMHO.
