Dans une cité ouvrière, deux garçons tentent de fuir leur quotidien parfois dur en s'inventant un monde imaginaire. Mais la réalité finir toujours par reprendre ses droits.

In a working class neighborhood, two boys trying to escape their daily hard life by inventing an imaginary world. But reality always take its course eventually.

(my take)
The story is about a lonely boy and his mother. There is no father figure in his life and the only male figuree in his young life are the men who visit his mom during the day to have a "good" time. Our protagonist is being bullied and ridiculed by other kids because of his mother and the fact that they are poor.
One day on his way home he sees this other kid playing by himself. Someone else who seems to be as lonely as he is. In no time they become friends and the older boy tells him about this imaginary world behind the wall, the amazing things that he sees when he looks over the edge.
Together they create an imaginary world which let them escape from the harsh reality of their own lives.
Till one day the older boy has to stand up against the bullies and defend his younger, helpless friend. By doing so he (I think) kills one of the bullies by accident (out of rage) and because of that their imaginary world crumbles down and they have to face the reality.
There is a twist at the end. After our young hero runs back to his mom with the older friend in tow there is a moment that the older kid is there (present), standing a few steps away it seems like the mother sees him too but the second take shows just an empty street.
It made me wonder if the older kid was indeed real or he was just a figment of our hero's imagination.
At the end our hero climbs up the make shift ladder and looks over the edge. What does he see? There is either a better world behind the wall or it is just the same harsh life repeating itself over and over again. It is viewers choice how the story ends.
