Update: 2-26-24, 3-19-24

Horror fans, rejoice. The Grabber (Ethan Hawke) will return to terrorize more children in Blumhouse's "The Black Phone 2." Furthermore, some of the first film's main cast members are coming back for the frightening festivities.

According to Deadline, Hawke will reprise the role of the creepy, mask-wearing, child-abducting villain from the first movie. Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and Miguel Mora are also set to return for "The Black Phone 2," playing Finney, Gwen, Terrence, and Robin, respectively. That said, it remains to be seen what's in store for their characters.

Plot details about the sequel are being kept under wraps for now, but the casting announcements give us a good idea of what to expect in "The Black Phone 2."

Of course, it's entirely possible that the serial kidnapper survived the ordeal and will set out to wreak more havoc on Finney and his allies. At the same time, the first movie contains many supernatural elements, meaning that Finney and the gang might have to contend with the Grabber's vengeful spirit.

The Black Phone 2 (2025)

Back in October 2023, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions announced that The Black Phone 2 will be receiving a theatrical release on June 27, 2025, marking the “launch of a sinister new franchise.” Soon after, it was revealed that the sequel will see the return of Mason Thames (How to Train Your Dragon) as Finney Shaw, Madeleine McGraw (Secrets of Sulphur Springs) as Finney’s sister Gwen, Jeremy Davies (Justified) as their dad Terrence, and Miguel Mora, whose only previous credit is The Black Phone, as Robin, a friend of Finney’s who was killed in the first movie. Plus, yes, Ethan Hawke (Moon Knight) will be reprising the role of the child-killer known as The Grabber. The Black Phone director Scott Derrickson had said he would only return for a sequel if Hawke did as well… and after Hawke was confirmed to be returning, we learned that Derrickson will indeed be directing The Black Phone 2. The fact that The Grabber will be back in the sequel is surprising to some viewers – but it’s not a surprise to author Joe Hill, who wrote the short story The Black Phone was based on.

Hill wrapped up his version of the story in just a handful of pages, but he told ComicBook.com that he suspected The Grabber would be around for more than one movie when he saw the mask the character would be wearing. Hill said, “As soon as I saw the mask, which was designed by Tom Savini and Jason Baker, as soon as I saw the mask I thought, “If this film is a hit, there’ll be a sequel,’ because the mask is so iconic. It is like Freddy Krueger’s glove, it is like Michael Myers’ mask, it is this thing where it’s the imagery, iconic imagery, that haunts people’s sleep. And, look, in horror, guys like Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger, and Frankenstein, and Dracula, none of these guys stay buried. They all claw their way out of the grave for a sequel and then a threequel.”

Mason Thames looks great just like he did in the first film. I just hope 'Black Phone 2' is an improvement on its predecessor which failed to capture real horror and seemed, to me, made for teens to scream at.

PS How come I am the only member who has posted a comment on the first Black Phone film?

Thanks, Damien, for the clips.    Smiley

The Black Phone 2 Starts Filming in June 2024 in Los Angeles, CA  update 3-19-24

The filming of ‘The Black Phone 2’ is set to commence this June in Los Angeles, California.
The highly anticipated sequel to the 2022 horror hit, directed by Scott Derrickson, is officially confirmed for release on June 27, 2025, with Ethan Hawke and the rest of the main original cast reprising their roles. Derrickson is expected to return to helm the sequel as well.

The original film featured Hawke as the Grabber, a child abductor and murderer, alongside Mason Thames, who portrayed 13-year-old Finney, a young boy ensnared by the killer. The Grabber confines Finney to a soundproof basement, leaving him isolated and unable to signal for help. The sole presence in the basement is a disconnected telephone that unexpectedly begins to ring. As Finney answers the call, he discovers the ability to communicate with the spirits of the Grabber’s previous victims. Guided by the ghostly children, Finney learns survival tactics and successfully escapes from the clutches of the Grabber.

Though the specifics of the sequel’s plot remain under wraps, the first movie opens the door to numerous intriguing narrative avenues. If the victims of the Grabber possess the ability to communicate from beyond and influence the real world, the second film can explore a more chilling iteration of his sinister actions. Alternatively, delving into the Grabber’s backstory may offer insights into the factors shaping his malevolent nature.

Hawke is set to reprise his role as the Grabber in the second movie, raising questions about the nature of the serial killer’s resurgence, given his supposed demise in the first film. However, as the adage goes, it’s challenging to keep a formidable villain down. Joining Hawke are the primary cast members of the initial movie, who include Mason Thames as Finney, Madeleine McGraw as Gwen, Jeremy Davies as Terrence Shaw, and Miguel Mora as Robin.

Unlike the first movie, which was mainly filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina, the production of the sequel is slated to start in The City of Angels Los Angeles,CA in June 2024.
